Knowing and loving the Natura 2000 marine sites to protect them

The project

LIFE A-MAR NATURA 2000 is a project funded by the LIFE Environmental Governance & Information Program aimed at disseminating and promoting good conservation practices in N2000 marine areas, through more sustainable management of human activities and the involvement of key stakeholders who benefit from the ecosystem services of these areas.

The project, which will end in 2025, will carry out communication and information actions that will mainly cover Natura2000 marine sites in the Mediterranean, in Italy and Spain, and will involve all sea users, including fishermen, divers, boaters or managers of accommodation/tourism/nautical activities, etc.

LIFE Programme and the Natura 2000 Network

The LIFE programme is the instrument the European Union uses to fund nature and environmental conservation projects, particularly for the protection of biodiversity, the fight against climate change, and the transition to clean energy and the circular economy.

LIFE has been active since 1992 and has so far funded more than 5 thousand projects that have promoted action plans and dissemination, innovative techniques and approaches, to update and develop EU environmental legislation and policies. Over the years, there are many LIFE projects that have concretely contributed to improving the protection of endangered habitats and species, including brown bears, monk seals, wolves, and hundreds of endangered birds.

The LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000 sailing campaign in Italy

To obtain the expected results, LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000 activities aim to involve a wide audience, made up of residents, boaters, fishermen, divers, nature guides, environmentalists, researchers, managers of protected areas and marine sites of the Natura 2000 Network .

To this end, in the spring of 2023, a sailing campaign was started in Italy, which touched more than 50 Natura 2000 marine sites, which will then be repeated in 2024 in Spain, touching at least 10 Natura 2000 marine sites.
