The Island of Favignana is located off the coast of Trapani and is part of the Egadi Archipelago, both with the islands of Marettimo and Levanzo, as well as the small rocks of Formica and Maraone. It has a partially degraded landscape, partly due to the extensive exploitation of limestone quarries, particularly intense in the past. Like the other Egadi Islands, it also holds significant faunistic importance, as it is situated along the main Europe-Africa migratory route in western Sicily.
