Isola Bella, Capo Taormina e Capo S. Andrea

This area consists of a precious stretch of high calcareous coast with great landscape and naturalistic value, which is subjected to strong anthropogenic pressure of an urban and touristic nature. Here, there are several species that are quite rare in Sicily, some of which are exclusive to this area with significant phytogeographic interest. The fauna holds notable scientific and biogeographic interest. Among the bird species, it was observed the Audouin’s gull; this bird is a relatively rare species that finds a particularly favorable environment in the site due to the conservation measures. In particular, the prohibition of boat traffic seems to have had very positive effects on this species which has significantly increased in recent years. Despite its small size, the site hosts a rich invertebrate fauna with many endemic and/or rare species which are highly localized in Sicily.
