“Life Above and Below the Sea 2025”: Photography Showcasing the Biodiversity of the Natura 2000 Network

The third season of the LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000 photography competition opens, inviting the discovery and appreciation of marine and coastal biodiversity in the Mediterranean. Submit your photos by August 20 and carefully read the rules to participate!

THEME
Title: “LIFE ABOVE AND BELOW THE SEA”
If the subject of the photo is an animal, it must have been photographed in the Mediterranean basin, and captive subjects are not allowed.

SCHEDULE
Competition opens: May 28, 2025
Competition closes: August 20, 2025
Jury voting: August 21 to August 30, 2025
Winner announcement: September 2, 2025
Award ceremony: September 3 to September 7, 2025 during the Ocean Live Park – as part of the Ocean Race Europe

IMAGE REQUIREMENTS
The contest is open to all. Each author may submit a maximum of 3 images (hereafter referred to as the “Work(s)” or “Image(s)”).
Submitted works must be in JPG format, with the longer side measuring at least 2,000 pixels. RAW photos are not accepted.
Images can be in color or black and white. Normal adjustments to color, tone, contrast, saturation, and levels are allowed. Photomontages, retouching involving removal or addition of key elements, as well as frames, dates, signatures, or superimposed text are not allowed. At the time of submission, the images must not have received prizes or mentions in other photo contests.
Each author is personally responsible for the content and description of the submitted Work and releases the organizers from any liability. Participation implies that the submitted images do not infringe on third-party rights. The author guarantees they have obtained any necessary permissions for images depicting people and/or objects requiring specific consent.

SUBMISSION OF IMAGES
Photos must be sent via email or WeTransfer to the following address:

Each work must be numbered, include the author’s initials, the title (referring to the species), and indicate the area where it was taken (e.g., Open Sea off Genoa; Vulcano Island Coast; Portofino Marine Protected Area; ZPS Secche di Tor Paterno; etc.). For example, “Mario Rossi, photo of a dolphin taken at ZPS Secche di Tor Paterno” would be: MR_Dolphin_1_ZPS Secche di Tor Paterno.
The final deadline for submission is 11:59 PM on August 20, 2025.

RIGHTS
Ownership and rights of the Images remain with the authors, who grant Triton Research Srl free usage and publication rights – both online and offline – for the submitted Works, with the obligation to credit the author’s name. The author authorizes Triton Research Srl to publish and distribute the Images for purposes related to the photo contest, its communication and promotion, such as catalogs, calendars, websites (with watermark if requested), exhibitions, or other cultural purposes.
Triton Research Srl may not transfer usage rights to third parties or use the authors’ images for profit.
Each author declares to be the sole copyright holder of the Images and is personally responsible for the content and description of the submitted Work, releasing Triton Research Srl from any liability. Participation implies that the submitted Images do not infringe on third-party rights. The author guarantees they have obtained the necessary permissions for Images depicting people and/or objects requiring specific consent, releasing Triton Research Srl from any liability.

JURY
The jury, which will evaluate the works, consists of:

  • Francesco Tomasinelli, Communication Manager of the LIFE Conceptu Maris project, Triton Research, naturalist and photographer

  • Maria Villani, Project and Institutional Relations Manager, Federparchi-Europarc Italia

  • LIPU

  • Marcello Di Francesco, Underwater Photographer
    The jury’s decision is final and not subject to appeal. The evaluation will consider the technical aspects of the images (composition, file quality, sharpness) and natural science aspects (uniqueness of the situation, rarity of the depicted species). Higher scores will be awarded to photos taken at Natura 2000 Sites.

PRIZES
Among all submitted works, the jury will select 3 winning works per category (classified as first, second, and third place).

  • First place will receive the book “Atlas of Mediterranean Flora and Fauna: A Guide to Biodiversity in Marine Environments” by Egidio Trainito and Rossella Baldacconi, project merchandise, and a printed copy of the photo.

  • Second place will receive a printed photo on forex, project merchandise, and a printed copy of the photo.

  • Third place will receive a printed photo on forex, project merchandise, and a printed copy of the photo.

Prizes will be sent or handed directly to the winners.

PRIVACY
Providing all requested data is a prerequisite for participation in the contest. The aforementioned personal data will be processed – in compliance with EU Regulation 2016/679 (G.D.P.R.) – using paper and electronic tools, ensuring security and confidentiality, exclusively for participation in this contest, for identifying winners, and for crediting authors when the photos are exhibited or published. It is possible at any time to exercise the rights under Chapter III of the G.D.P.R., such as requesting correction, updating, or deletion of data. The data subject can exercise their rights under the G.D.P.R. The data controller is Triton Research S.r.l. Via Alessandro Scarlatti 8 – 80129 Naples.

FINAL PROVISIONS
Participation in the contest implies knowledge and acceptance of these rules.
