column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][vc_column_text]Between 14 and 20 May, the scheduled stopovers in the Balearic Islands took place as part of the navigation campaign, which covered more than 10 marine sites of the Natura 2000 Network in the Mediterranean to raise awareness of the benefits and opportunities of these areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marine Areas of the Natura 2000 Network in the Balearic Islands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Off the coast of the Balearic Islands there are 52 such marine sites. The navigation campaign visited five of them: Ibiza Channel, Ses Salines d\u2019Eivissa i Formentera, Sa Dragonera, Bays of Pollen\u00e7a and Alc\u00fadia, and the southern coast of Menorca\u2013northern coast of Ciutadella<\/p>\n<p>Ses Salines d\u2019Eivissa i Formentera is both a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA), encompassing the former salt flats of Ibiza and Formentera. Its wetlands are a privileged location for birdwatching. The marine area is characterised by the presence, in an excellent state of conservation, of Posidonia oceanica, a key species for the preservation of the Mediterranean marine ecosystem. In this site, the extension and condition of the seagrass meadows are outstanding. Other protected species inhabiting its waters and coasts include the European shag (Gulosus aristotelis), the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and the Balearic shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus), Europe\u2019s most threatened bird species.<\/p>\n<p>Sa Dragonera, in Mallorca, is a site comprising the island of Sa Dragonera and the islets of Es Pantaleu and Sa Mitjana. The park covers 275 hectares of land, complemented by 457 hectares of marine reserve of fishing interest. The great biological value of the marine area lies in the wide variety of habitats, such as Posidonia oceanica meadows or large forests of macroalgae that provide refuge for the regeneration of many species of fish, crustaceans and octopuses. The steep rocky seabeds of the outer waters quickly drop to great depths, with numerous crevices and caves in the cliffs that provide valuable habitats for a wide range of species.
