The western submarine canyon systems of the Gulf of Leon possess a range of environmental, socio-economic, and geographical features that render it a distinctive location in the Mediterranean. A significant portion of the nearby land and sea area is designated as a Natural Park. This site includes a vast area encompassing portions of the Creus, Lacaze-Duthiers, and Pruvost canyons and secondary submarine canyons. Strong winds characterise the area, and it has one of the highest levels of biological productivity in the Mediterranean, as well as a remarkable biodiversity. It is important to note that this area is becoming increasingly popular among summer-season tourists. The region offers excellent conditions for recreational boating and underwater activities. Many of the marine communities in the coastal area are of great scenic importance, such as the coral reefs. The region also has a long-standing tradition of artisanal and professional fishing, which holds significant importance.
