Sa Dragonera

Sa Dragonera Island is the largest among the islets surrounding Mallorca. It is situated to the southwest, just 780 metres away. This location’s proximity to the coast makes it highly visible from the nearby town of Sant Elm. The island has a distinct profile that spans four kilometres. This islet spans 288 hectares and is considered an extension of Mallorca’s Tramontana mountain range. On one hand, the northwest coast boasts impressive 300-metre cliffs. The larger slope, which covers most of the island’s surface, has a much more gradual incline. The slope’s relaxation permits the presence of small torrents, which form the only coves on the island at their mouths. The most significant cave is the Cueva del Moro or Cueva de Sa Font. It is a spacious natural cave with an irregular floor plan, various concavities, and small lakes at the bottom. Moreover, five additional caves and six smaller ones have been catalogued. These areas, particularly Cova des Moro, are significant for their fauna and vegetation, which includes some endemic species. All the small islets located between the coast of Mallorca and Sa Dragonera are part of the Natural Park. The most important islet is Pantaleu, located near the village of Sant Elm. It is the only islet with permanent vegetation cover and is of notable faunistic and floristic interest.
