The Albera Natural Site of National Interest is situated in the northeast of Alt Empordà county, within the Albera mountain range, spanning the municipalities of La Jonquera, Espolla, and Rabós. This is the eastern and southernmost point of the Catalan Pyrenees. It is an ecological and landscape area of high quality where one can observe the transition between the species that are typical of the Pyrenean mountain range and those that are more typical of the Mediterranean. The Albera region exhibits a distinct blend of sub-Mediterranean and Central European characteristics. Meanwhile, the eastern or maritime Albera region is predominantly Mediterranean in nature. It is important to note that this area is home to the only population of Mediterranean tortoise in Catalonia that has not been reintroduced.
