The area is a unique example of maritime-terrestrial terrain within the coastal mountains of the southern Autonomous Community of Valencia. An impressive relief rises abruptly above the beaches of Benidorm, l’Alfàs del Pi and Altea. On its coastal front, the mountain range forms cliffs that rise over 400 metres and contains pockets of exceptionally valuable vegetation. The area not only includes Serra Gelada but also a marine area and two islets, Illot de Benidorm and Illa Mitjana, both located near the coast of Benidorm. Both the islets and the mountain range are home to many unique plant species. In terms of fauna, the Autonomous Community of Valencia is home to the largest population of European storm petrels. The populations of European Shags that use this area as a feeding and resting ground are also noteworthy.
