It is situated on the coastline of the Region of Murcia, facing the municipalities of San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier, Cartagena, Mazarrón and Águilas. The region comprises a submerged coastal area that varies in width. This extensive area contains several Sites of Community Importance, such as submerged or semi-submerged sea caves or sandbanks, which are generally in excellent condition. The area is home to several species, including the Loggerhead Turtle and the Bottlenose Dolphin. The coastal strip is important for species such as Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii), European Storm Petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus), Audouin’s Gull (Ichthyaetus audouinii), Slender-Billed Gull (Larus genei), Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) and Little Tern (Sterna albifrons) as a feeding and nesting area.
