The marine conservation area, Fondos Marinos Levante Almeriense, is situated along the coasts of Pulpí, Cuevas de Almanzora, Vera, Garrucha, Mojácar and the northern end of Carboneras. The bodies of water surrounding these areas are part of the Alboran Sea. The protected marine area is situated within this framework in a purely Mediterranean location. The Posidonia meadows between Villaricos and Terreros are the most extensive and best-preserved on the Spanish coastline, occupying a wide strip more than 3 km wide in some places. The meadow and rocky seabed surrounding the island of Los Terreros are in excellent condition, as is the small Posidonia barrier reef located in front of El Calón. These formations enhance the fish community in the area both qualitatively and quantitatively. Endangered species in the Mediterranean can be found here.
