The marine protected area encompasses the Bay of Algeciras and extends to the Alboran Sea. It follows the coastline of the municipality of La Línea de la Concepción and reaches the western end of the Gibraltar peninsula. The Gibraltar Strait features an east-west oriented canyon, with shallow waters on the Atlantic side and deeper waters on the Mediterranean side. The marine protected area is in the latter. Several reefs and partially submerged sea caves have been identified as Sites of Community Importance.
