It is part of the geological area known as the Gibraltar Arc, formed by the collision of the Maghreb and Baetic Mountain Ranges. The diversity of the terrestrial and marine environments allows for the presence of unique species. Cetaceans such as Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), Common Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), and reptiles such as Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta) are particularly abundant. The area is also an important area for many birds’ migratory routes.
