The protected area includes the waters adjacent to the Cabrera archipelago and part of the southern sector of the island of Mallorca, from the Bay of Palma to just beyond the cape of Ses Salines. The coastline of Mallorca has long, low cliffs, especially in the western part. There is also a group of small islets off Colonia de Sant Jordi. In general, the waters are poor in nutrients. This is due to the lack of riverine inputs or deep water upwelling. Nevertheless, the quality and state of conservation of the seabed – mostly sandy with some areas of pebbles and rocks – is very good, especially in the Cabrera archipelago.
