A marine area to the north of the island of Mallorca, covering part of the channel between the islands of Mallorca and Menorca. It covers a strip of sea in the north of the island. It extends from the coast to the 50 metres isobath in Tramuntana. The coastline is dominated by large cliffs in the western sector, especially at the north-western end of the Tramontana mountain range, and by wide bays in the centre (the bays of Formentor and Alcudia), with occasional small islets close to the coast. This area is rich in Posidonia meadows. It is also an important spawning ground for several species of fish. This marine area combines important feeding areas for the Scopoli’s Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) and the Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus), with extensions of several colonies of the shag, which together form the most important population of the Mediterranean subspecies (Gulosus aristotelis) in Spain.
