The Ebro River directly influences this marine area. It runs alongside the coast for over 140 kilometres, from the cape of Salou in the north to the area around the Columbretes Islands and Castellón de la Plana in the south. In the Mediterranean context, the area is particularly rich in food due to various factors that increase the concentration of nutrients on the surface. This leads to high productivity, supporting abundant phytoplankton and zooplankton, which are preyed upon by many small pelagic fish species, such as sardines or anchovies.
