This marine area is situated in the Mediterranean Sea, to the east of the Iberian Peninsula, off the coast of the province of Alicante. The protected marine area runs almost parallel to the coast and narrows as it approaches Penyal d’Ifac, where it reaches its maximum width. The waters off Penyal d’Ifac reach a depth of over 40m. The climate in the area is characterised by high relative humidity during the summer and frequent sea breezes throughout the year. These breezes increase humidity, which has a dampening effect on temperatures. This area of Alicante is part of the driest and most arid region of the Spanish coast. This is also reflected in the oceanographic conditions, with the water having higher temperature and salinity values than the surrounding bodies of water.
