Espacio marino de Alborán

This area includes the waters and the sea bed above the highest part of a submarine mountain range. The exposed part of this mountain range is the small volcanic island of Alboran. The quality, importance and uniqueness of these marine habitats are largely due to their geographical location, with the influence of Atlantic surface waters entering the Mediterranean through the Gibraltar Strait. The Alboran Basin represents just over a quarter (27%) of the Mediterranean’s total biodiversity, with 1,645 marine species identified so far.
