Within this space, there are three distinct areas: Els Aiguamolls del Baix Empordà. They are located between the massif of Montgrí and the mountains of Begur. It is an environment with geological formations that are of a great singularity. There is also a system of continental and coastal dunes parallel to the shoreline, in addition to the system of coastal lagoons. This area’s zoogeographical importance is considerable. Firstly, because it sustains species that are very rare in Catalonia. Secondly, it is one of the last refuges for aquatic birds. It is also an ideal place for migrating seabirds. El Montgrí. It is a calcareous island of remarkable geological singularity, with interesting features such as abysses, caves, etc. The coastline of this area is the only example of a high limestone coast in Catalonia. A good representation of Mediterranean benthic assemblages is found in marine ecosystems. It is also an extensive coastal area with very little human habitation, which is home to the largest population of the Longwinged Bat (Miniopterus) in Catalonia. Medes Islands. It is like the Alt Empordà regarding its botanical and zoological characteristics. A predominance of swamp and wetland vegetation characterises the vegetation landscape. The fauna is of great importance, and the diversity of the bird population stands out, with numerous groups of species typical of wetlands and riverbanks.
