Cala d’Algairens

The presence of an extensive Posidonia meadow is the main reason for the quality and importance of this small marine reserve. Among the protected species or species of Community interest that inhabit or make use of this marine area, the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), Audouin’s Gull (Icthyaetus audouinii) and the European Shag (Gulosus aristotelis) stand out, all of which are considered vulnerable in the Spanish catalogue of endangered species. The coastal cliffs are also home to the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). As for cetaceans and marine reptiles, if you are lucky, you may see some dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and, more rarely, individual Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta). Anchoring by recreational craft is currently the main threat to deep-sea benthic assemblages (mainly Posidonia beds), while bycatch and ghost fishing are the main threats to seabirds and loggerhead sea turtles. A major threat to dolphins and other cetaceans is excessive boat traffic.
