The marine area includes the waters of the Bay of Málaga, from the mouth of the Guadalhorce River to the border between the provinces of Málaga and Granada, opposite the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo. Its high productivity is due to the inflow of the Guadalhorce and the cold, nutrient-rich surface waters from the Atlantic. Therefore, the reproduction and growth of small coastal pelagic fish, especially sardines and anchovies, is favoured. The habitat is particularly suitable for the Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis).
