Highly ornithologically valuable area and of national interest for the wintering of Anas acuta, A. strepera and A. clypeata. At the regional level, it is the most important site for the wintering of the Eurasian coot. Since 1994, it has been the only nesting site for the American Flamingo on the peninsula, which has long wintered in large numbers. Moreover, it is the main area on the Tyrrhenian coast for the stopover of bird species associated with brackish environments.
