The site consists of a large coastal backdune lagoon complex, a remnant of an ancient lagoon filled with Quaternary deposits. It hosts three coastal lakes in artificial communication with the sea. The substrates are sandy-silty, locally peaty. In particular, saline encrustations form on the surface at several points during the summer season.
The site is primarily important for the diversity of wintering and migratory bird species and hygrophilous entomofauna. Moreover, Several species rare for the Lazio region are present, serving as significant ecological and biological indicators.
