The site, previously included within the “Cinque Terre” Protected Area and containing a Partial Reserve, now falls under the Regional Natural Park of Portovenere. The island encompasses habitats that have been degraded by fires but capable of improvement. Along the coast, there are some marine caves, while on the north side of the island there is a small Posidonia oceanica meadow: a remnant of a once larger formation. Of notable importance is the rich presence of bird species of community interest, some of which are rare at the regional or national level. Equally significant are the caves with fossil deposits (such as the Colombi fossiliferous cave, the blue cave and other marine caves).
