The Island of Marettimo, both with the larger islands of Favignana and Levanzo, as well as the rocks of Formica and Maraone, is part of the Egadi Islands, which is located in the Sicily Channel off the western coast of Trapani. Marettimo Island is the farthest from the Sicilian coast and it covers an area of 12.3 square kilometers; administratively, it is part of the municipality of Favignana. The site comprises significant natural and environmental interest, as well as phytocenotic aspects with highly unique vegetation, within which a large number of endemic plant species and/or species of phytogeographical importance are represented. On the Island of Marettimo, there are colonies of marine birds of particular significance at the European level, hosting one of the largest populations of European storm petrel in the Mediterranean.
