The site extends within the territory of the province of La Spezia in the municipality of Framura. Previously, the impact of significant sediment input – both of natural and anthropogenic origin – has caused considerable damage to the marine environment of this site. However, the remaining habitats in the area are in good conservation status.
In the eastern portion of the site, the Posidonia meadow, a priority habitat for the conservation of marine biodiversity, builds interesting and very shallow formations close to the coast. The biodiversity in the marine area has increased due to direct planting on rock of portions of the meadow and the proximity of an adjacent Cymodocea meadow. This proximity promotes the formation of an ecotone – the transition zone between the two meadows – where biodiversity is particularly high.
