The width of the beach has changed from a few meters to an hundred in recent decades. It has undergone widespread degradation as well as the extensive Posidonia oceanica meadows that characterize the site. The meadows include an high-biodiversity communities; moreover, they are important nurseries for commercially valuable fish and significant for coastal erosion protection.
Therefore, the site is to be considered important due to the presence of sporadic Posidonia meadows, the presence of coralligenous formations, the habitat 1110, the presence of species protected under the annexes of other Directives or international Conventions and the presence of particular species which is due to the unique water regime of the Strait of Messina.
