The site is characterized by a Posidonia meadow in good conservation status which is predominantly established on “matte” that borders in some areas with Cymodocea formations. The level of biodiversity in the site is high due to the presence of rocky shoals with typical Coralligenous populations. Additionally, the site hosts a subterranean source of freshwater. The area in front of Capo Mortola is also in good conservation status. Furthermore, the site includes Pinna nobilis, a species of bivalve mollusk which is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, highly vulnerable and threatened.
