Valles submarinos del Escarpe de Mazarron

This section refers to the marine environment located south of Isla del Fraile, in the municipality of Águilas. Located around 12 kilometres from Cabo de Palos, in Cartagena. It is a point where Mediterranean and Atlantic waters mix and diverge, which is of great interest. The Mazarrón escarpment is the most significant feature of the area’s physiography. It is an impressive underwater wall that results from the morphological expression of a major fault system. Part of the escarpments that run continuously from Cape Gata to the Balearic promontory, the area is crossed by various underwater valleys, including Negrete, Tiñoso, and Espada, among others.
