Litoral del Baix Empordà

The coastline of the Baix Empordà comprises a maritime and terrestrial area. It is formed by the Montgrí massif and its coastal façade. The Montgrí massif is a well-defined limestone relief whose coastal façade forms a high rocky coastline with cliffs almost 100 metres high, subject to the sea’s strong dynamic action. The land surface is covered with vegetation typical of the northern Catalan coast. There are Mediterranean scrub formations. The fauna is distinctly Mediterranean. The coastline is populated by characteristic sea cliff communities. There are biocenoses of algae and animals on the sea bed. Particularly noteworthy is the system of coastal lagoons and the continental and coastal dunes that are formed parallel to the coastline. The area generally stands out for its geological, biological and scenic uniqueness. It is situated in an area of exceptional beauty. The coastal cliffs are also important. They are a refuge for some rare and endemic species of Mediterranean flora and fauna. The diversity of the benthic assemblages is also outstanding. They represent this part of the Catalan coast.
